  Heart The heart is a vital organ central to the circulatory system, pumping blood to supply oxygen and nutrients while removing waste. Located in the thoracic cavity, it is protected by the ribcage and pericardium, a sac that reduces friction during contractions. The heart has four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle. The atria receive blood, and the ventricles pump it out, maintaining separation of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. Valves—tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral, and aortic—ensure unidirectional blood flow. Through systole (contraction) and diastole (relaxation), the right ventricle sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs, and the left ventricle pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body.
